How to Overcome the Challenges

I have used CATPIN for the last decade. It’s amazing how many different uses I’ve come up with! As a result, I have been able to manage the few challenges it may present, and make the benefits far out weight the challenges.

Problem: Answer Documents Can’t Be Saved

Solution #1 | SNIP-IT

It’s true, you can’t save the answer document to your computer. But, I’ve found a work around. I use my Snipping Tool and take a screen shot of the document, cropping as needed. Then I paste it into a word document and save it to my computer. Because it’s an image, I can manipulate the size for students if needed.

Problem: Goofy Layouts

Solution #2 | Cut and Paste… With Scissors

Sometimes a goofy layout is the result of having a few different item styles. I have a solution for that, too. For years, I would print up the answer document and physically cut it apart to be able to manipulate various elements on the document and tape them down on paper to get the desired appearance. Old school, I know… but now I’ve upped my game.

Problem: Limited Customization with Goofy Layouts

Solution #3 | Snipping Tools and PowerPoint

I use my handy dandy Snipping Tool and take a screen shot of each element and import those into a PowerPoint slide. I adjust the screenshot of each item group for my assessment on the slide, add a title and a place for the students’ names and save it as a PDF. Now I have it for future use.

Problem: You Can’t Make an Answer Key on Catpin

Solution #4 | Create an Overlay

Don’t let this discourage you from using CATPIN because what I’m about to share with you have saved me hundreds and hundreds of hours of grading over the course of the last decade.

I make my own answer key.

Here’s how…

You’re going to need a single hole punch to create an answer key.

Make two copies of the answer document. One copy is the master copy for future use and the other, the answer key.

Catpin Answer DOcument Key

Mark all correct answers. Using a hole punch, punch out each correct answer.
Use the holy answer key as an overlay to each student document.

In order to speed the grading process up even more, I include a hand-written grading scale on the answer document, so I can grade and record their tests quickly.

I generated a new answer key for new assessment today. It took me less than 10 minutes. It took me less than 15 minutes to grade and record over 70 tests!!!

The best part was, students were able to see their score before the end of the period and I was able to provide immediate feedback to students who needed review of specific skills.
